Since 1990 the media in Cameroon has witnessed substantial change and transformation in many areas - especially in ownership of media organizations and freedom from censorship. The Cameroon media enjoys a healthy and critical position towards government and the conditions for reporting can generally be said to be free and fair. Newspaper organizations spring up on a day-to-day basis, while the audio-visual media is also enjoying greater freedom.
However, the extent to which the media in Cameroon has contributed to positive changes in the country cannot be over emphasized; considering the power of the media to shape people's political, economic, social and cultural perceptions, there is an increasing need for its monitoring.
It is sad indeed to realize that the challenges facing the media in the era of increasing human rights awareness are enormous, and that the lack of skilled staff and poverty has resulted in increasing incidents of poor reporting.
This project is conceived for the improvement of the background of excesses and challenges that constitute the media environment, and it is expected to assess, promote and ameliorate the work of the media in the field of human rights, using both local and international media guiding principles.
